A Short History

Trinity Church, Alliance, Ohio

From the 1860's

The seeds of Trinity Episcopal Church in Alliance, Ohio, were sown in the 1860s and 1870s. The missionary vision of several individuals, including Bishop Bedell (b. 1817 - d. 1892), eventually identified Alliance, Ohio, as a prospective site for an Episcopal Church.

However, it was not until the establishment of Thomas R. Morgan's 'Hammer Shop,' later to become Morgan Engineering, that this vision truly began to materialize.

Mr. Morgan (b.1834 - d.1897) hired many skilled mechanics from England and Wales to work in his shop. These men, many of whom were formerly affiliated with the Church of England, appealed to the Bishop of Ohio to form an Episcopal Church mission in Alliance.

On June 13, 1888, the mission named Trinity was formally  admitted into union with the Diocese of Ohio.  Its first vicar was the Rev. George Bosley (b. 1835-d. 1898).

The ensuing years were challenging, as the small mission struggled through periods of both industrial prosperity and depression. Membership remained small, and debts were substantial. The mission frequently shared a clergyman with a neighboring Episcopal church.

Financial support from the Diocese of Ohio largely kept Trinity afloat. Following the loss of its original church building, which was sold to pay off lingering debt, and after several lean years in the early 1900s, Trinity began work on a new house of worship.

With the support and financial assistance of Bishop The Right Reverend Frank DuMoylin (b. 1870 - d. 1947), a new church was erected and dedicated at 820 Linden Avenue in 1916

The building was designed by C. T. Bird, a member of the congregation. With full-time ordained leadership, the mission began to grow significantly. On February 5, 1935, the mission, Trinity, became a parish.

As a newly established parish in the late 1930s, Trinity had approximately 150 communicants operating on a 'pay-as-you-go' budget. Following World War II, the congregation had outgrown its Linden Avenue church.  Under the leadership of the Rev. Ralph Reamsnyder (b. 1912 - d. 1991), the Linden Avenue building was sold, and a new structure was erected on the present site at 1200 South Union Avenue

On St. Patrick's Day, 1951, the current church was dedicated. As growth continued throughout the 1950's and 1960's, the dream of a parish house with Sunday School rooms and office space energized the parishioners. In 1967 a new parish house was added.

.

Today, Trinity continues its role as a vibrant center of worship, education, community service, and fellowship, much as it has throughout its history.  With its dedicated communicants, rector, and part-time staff (including an organist-choir director, office manager, and bookkeeper), Trinity Parish stands ready to embrace its next 100 years.
